.org aargh!

March 6, 2009

I was just trying to find the publisher for an ISBN, so I went to http://www.isbn.org, thinking they’d have a way to find that out.  You’d think the information of what publisher corresponds to what ISBN prefix would be public domain, after all.

Well, there doesn’t seem to be any way to look up such a thing.

But they sure make it easy to purchase their services, for which Bowker holds the “stewardship” (see http://www.isbn.org/standards/home/isbn/us/isbnus.asp).

This must be the neoliberal definition of “stewardship” — all profit and no service.  So how does that merit an .org domain?
